SANDPOINT, Idaho -- The Sandcreek Byway in Sandpoint is getting closer to opening, but first road crews have to tackle a minor delay.

Instead of opening on May 31st, drivers will have to wait until July to use the byway.

About a week ago construction crews started gutting and replacing a concrete chunk on the south end of the byway.  It was cracking after the concrete settled faster than the asphalt, so workers are now repairing the cracks, causing the delay.

The byway will connect Highways 2 and 95 so drivers won’t have to use surface streets through Sandpoint.

“I can’t tell you how exciting it is not only for the town and the community,” said Barbara Babic of the Idaho Department of Transportation.

After four years of planning and construction, the byway should be open around the 4th of July.  That is still ahead of schedule because contractors originally had the opening scheduled for November.
