SPOKANE-- One woman was flown to Sacred Heart Medical Center after hitting a semi-truck head on in North Spokane Tuesday.

Crews responded to a serious wreck around 11 a.m. near Market & Hawthorne. Very serious injuries were reported and MedStar was called to the scene.

Officials say a line of vehicles waited at cones on market near hawthorne when a woman in a red car veered past traffic. She struck this semi at full speed, head on.

The female driver was extricated and airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Chief Jack Cates said “She was obviously some place where she shouldn't have been. She was well into that South bound lane."

Officials say the woman is in critical condition with broken bones and internal injuries. She underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Jack Cates said “The impact was so significant that it was extremely surprising to see that the patient was still alive and talking when we got here."

Traffic was blocked.
