SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – The evening commute ended with a deadly crash Wednesday near 57th and Regal. Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies said a pedestrian was killed as he attempted to cross the street.
The collision happened just after 5:00 p.m. Investigators said a Chevy truck was traveling eastbound on 57th when the truck hit the male pedestrian. There were no early signs that the truck driver was at fault, deputies said. According to witnesses, the pedestrian was on the north side of 57th and ran south across the road. He was wearing dark clothing and ran across the middle of the road, rather than using the crosswalk at 57th and Regal, authorities added.
The pedestrian was reported dead at the scene. Investigators said the driver was cooperating with authorities.
The eastbound lane on 57th was expected to be shut down for around two hours while authorities continued their investigation and cleaned up the crash scene. Westbound traffic was getting through.
The Medical Examiner's Office planned to release the pedestrian's identity at a later date.
