NORTH SPOKANE, Wash.— A motorcyclist died after slamming into the side of a truck.

Authorities were called around 9:30 a.m. Friday to respond to a motorcycle and commercial vehicle wreck at Newport Highway and Bailey Road.

John C. Sanderson was riding his motorcycle up to his mother's funeral in Newport reported the Associated Press.

The Washington State Patrol says the driver of the truck pulled over to the shoulder to make a U-turn. Sanderson, 59, crashed into the driver’s side of the truck during the turn. Medics attempted CPR on Sanderson but were not successful.

After arriving on scene, authorities quickly asked for additional help from Northwest MedStar.  Pilots immediately launched a helicopter and responded to the scene. Sanderson was never transported.

The truck drier, 37-year-old Garry Baumgartner, was taken to Sacred Heart for minor injuries. He was cited for second-degree negligent driving.

First responders closed the highway in both directions so pilots could land the helicopter on the highway.  The road is now open.
