SPOKANE -- The city of Spokane now has four new red light cameras up and running at busy intersections across town. They went on-line at 8:00 Monday morning, with warnings for a 31-day grace period until April 1st. After that, citations will be issued with a $124 fine.
Spokane Police say about 7,500 drivers have run red lights at three intersections since the cameras have been operating since October 2008.
The new intersections include: Freya and 3rd, 2nd and Thor, Wellsley and Ash, and Division and Sprague. The three existing red light camera intersections are: Browne at Sprague, Hamilton at Mission, and Division at Francis.
Red light cameras brought in $103,000 for the city last year. But some still question how much safer they made the three intersections. Reports show they did not appear to cut down on wrecks. There were 38 accidents in 2009 compared to 32 the year before.
