SPOKANE, Wash. -- Major work began Thursday on a new interchange at a busy west Spokane intersection.

Many crashes have happened on Highway 195 at Cheney Spokane, including one that killed a Cheney High School student.

Emergency crews have responded to 28 crashes at the intersection in the last five years. One broke Thomas Grieb’s back, ribs and several other bones when a driver pulled in front of him while on his Harley.

“My wife and my friends, family-- they all prayed for me. God must be looking out for sailors and fools, and I’m both of them,” Grieb said.

Most recently, 16-year-old Lorissa Green died in a T-bone crash in 2009. Since, her family and others lobbied for safety improvements.

“I’m glad it’s happening. I’m really to the point where we need to get this done and just let everybody be safe,” Debi Hammel, Green’s mom, said.

Work is expected to be completed by fall.
