SPOKANE -- Spokane Police documents reveal new, bizarre details about an alleged extortion attempt against a Washington State lawmaker.

Washington State Represetative Richard Curtis resigned from office Wednesday.

According to a 15-page search warrant, Curtis met a man at an adult book store on East Sprague last Thursday and later had sex with him at the Davenport Tower Hotel.

Spokane Police are investigating an alleged extortion attempt against Washington State Rep. Richard Curtis.

But customers at the Hollywood Erotic Boutique told police Curtis had sex with another man while in the book store. A witness says he walked past an upstairs theater and saw Curtis engaged in a sex act with an approximately 40-year-old man with a cane.

Detectives also interviewed a store clerk, who told police Curtis is known as "the cross dresser" and first visited the store "three weeks to a month ago".

Police say after Curtis' sexual encounter with the man upstairs, he met 26-year-old Cody Castagna. Both Curtis and Castagna admit later having sex at Curtis' hotel. However, Curtis claims Castagna took his wallet and demanded $1000 in "hush money".

The next morning, Curtis left $200 in an envelope at the hotel front desk. Police say Castagna called Curtis again and demanded another $800. By that time, Curtis had notified Spokane Police and a detective was present during Castagna's phone call.

During a later interview with police, Curtis told detectives he met Castagna at the Hollywood Erotic Boutique on East Sprague and gave him $100 for gas money. Curtis insisted to investigators the money was strictly for gas.

Castagna was also brought in for questioning. He told police Curtis agreed to pay him $1000 for sex and that Curtis told him to take the wallet as collateral until he paid in full. Castagna admitted he threatened to publicly expose Curtis if he did not receive the money.

Detectives have now forwarded the case to Spokane County prosecutors.

Last night, Curtis told the Columbian newspaper in Vancouver, Washington, "I committed no crime. I did not solicit sex. I was trying to help somebody out,” he said.

The two-term House member adds, "I am not gay. I have not had sex with a guy."

KREM 2 News searched Castagna's criminal record and found several juvenile felony convictions, including theft and assault. He has not been charged with any felonies since turning 18.

Curtis, a republican, represents the 18th District in Southwestern Washington. According to his online biography, Curtis is a New Mexico native who moved to Washington eleven years ago.

Curtis was in Spokane last week attending a retreat with other republican lawmakers to discuss the upcoming legislative session.
