Obama rallies DNC on historic night
08:55 PM PDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008
DENVER, CO -- Barack Obama received a rock star-like response as he accepted the Democratic nomination for President.
In front of an estimated 76,000 people Obama made history as the first African-American nominee of a major political party.
“This moment - this election - is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive,” Obama said.
45-years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed of a night like this, when the first African-American accepted the nomination for President.
“This is one of the nation's defining moments,” said Bernice King, MLK's daughter.
Obama hopes to persuade voters that he's ready for the job and reach out to those watching at home who might not be familiar with his background and his goals.

With the speech, Obama held a “direct conversation” with Americans on everything from healthcare to security threats, and about the risks of putting another Republican in the White House.
The last Presidential candidate to accept his party's nomination at a stadium was John Kennedy in 1960, in front of 80,000.
Republicans scoffed at the grandiosity of this venue and the celebrity-studded event.
Now it's up to Obama to prove to voters in the weeks ahead that he's got as much substance as flash.
