TRINIDAD, WASH. -- Fire crews expect to have the Stuhlmiller Road Fire completely doused by 6 p.m. Wednesday, approximately 24 hours after the fire first started.

Throughout the day official estimates on the fire's size have varied from 1,200 - 1,700 acres.

Officials placed the first fire estimates at 5,000 acres.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office said a combine harvesting wheat possibly triggered the fire. The blaze erupted late Tuesday due to dry conditions and strong winds reaching as high as 40 mph.

A hillside burns near the Grant-Douglas County line.

Crews got a quick handle on the "Stuhlmiller Road Fire" and had it 30 percent contained before noon Wednesday. Grant Co. Emergency Management confirmed several outbuildings burned-- but no homes. At the fire's peak, more than 200 residents were evacuated and sent to a temporary shelter at Quincy High School.

The fire was first reported just after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening and it was only 20 acres in size.

Highway 28 near the fire had been closed due to poor visibility but has since re-opened.

Approximately 150 personnel are on the scene, and one helicopter is being utilized to fight the fire.
