UPDATE> Firefighters brace for gusty winds later today

The following is a timeline of events:
Tuesday
10:30 a.m. - A Red Flag Warning takes effect at noon for gusty winds, low humidity and hot temperatures-- all of which could cause the Valley View Fire to flare-up. Some firefighters are expected to be sent home later today, if conditions don't get too bad.
Monday
4:00 p.m. Fire officials say the Valley View Fire is now 80% contained. They also estimate the cost of fighting the fire at $1.4 million.
1:10 p.m. - The Red Cross has closed its evacuation shelter at University High School. More than 130 people stayed at the shelter during the height of the Valley View Fire.
12:30 p.m. - Firefighters have revised the total number of homes and outbuildings destroyed in the Valley View Fire. Officials now say eleven homes, five outbuildings and five sheds burned.

8 a.m. - Officials announce the fire did not grow on Sunday. Crews are working around the clock to mop up and reinforce firelines. There is a water system installed around the fire and water is flowing. Additional resources and reinforcements have arrived and will be on the fireline today. Infrared heat sensitive devices will be utilized today to detect hot spots so they can be extinguished. Other fire highlights include:
* The current size of the fire is 1,000 acres.
* Containment is at 70 percent.
* 438 personnel, 26 engines, 26 engines and two helicopters are being used to fight the fire.
6 a.m. - Firefighting costs estimated at $900,000.
Sunday
11:30 a.m. - Additional state firefighting resources continue to arrive to help with the Valley View Fire. Firefighting costs have topped $300,000.
9:30 a.m. - The evacuation order for residents within the fire area has been reduced to a level 2, meaning that residents only will be allowed into their homes. Only residents with identification will be allowed past the road blocks. Level 2 means residents must be ready to evacuate at a moments notice if need be.

Saturday
9:00 p.m. -- Valley View Fire now 60% contained. 322 firefighters on the fire lines tonight.
12:30 p.m. -- Fire crews have reported that the fire is 50 percent contained. They have 138 firefighters up in the hills working on the fire. Officials are hoping for some relief crews later this weekend.
*200 people are still evacuated. The Red Cross says that no one stayed in the shelter Friday night. People are gradually being allowed back into the evacuated areas.
*Officials say that they hope to have the fire completely mopped up by the end of the weekend.
Friday
8:45 p.m. - The size of the Valley View Fire has been decreased to 1000 acres, according to fire officials.
7:00 p.m. - Firefighters have resumed air tanker drops on the Valley View Fire.
4:30 p.m. - Sheriff's say firefighting efforts in some areas of the Valley View Fire continue, but some areas are being allowed to burn out if they present little danger of creating a flare-up.
Burning fuel and other hotspots still exist, so fire commanders estimate areas currently closed to residents will remain so for at least another 24 hours.
Residents in the Ponderosa area are being allowed to return to their homes without photo ID because of the mass influx of people wanting to return.
Access to homes along Glenrose Road was reopened to residents only. Roadblocks at 31st and Glenrose and 37th and Glenrose were removed and residents were allowed back into those areas. At 25th and Glenrose, the roadblock was moved back to Thurman Lane, blocking access only to Thurman.
2:30 p.m. - Firefighters say they've dug a trail all the way around the Valley View Wildfire. However, the fire is still actively burning. Homeowners in the areas where the fire is still burning will not be allowed home for at least 24 hours.
12The Ponderosa neighborhood (south of 32nd and southwest of Dishman-Mica Rd.) is now under a level two evacuation. This means homeowners can return to their homes, but will need to show photo ID at police checkpoints and remain prepared to re-evacuate on short notice.
* The neighborhood from 16th Ave. to 24th Ave. west of Dishman-Mica Rd. remains closed at this time.
* The Park Hill neighborhood remains closed until further notice, as well.
8:30 a.m. - Firefighters have confirmed 13 homes were destroyed in the Valley View Wildfire in Spokane Valley.
7:05 a.m. - Avista says 133 customers in Spokane are without power; 3,000 customers in Colville don't have electricity. The company has no estimates as to when power will be restored.
7:00 a.m. - Helicopter crews will fly helicopters to try and evaluate fire damage and check for hotspots.
2:20 a.m. - A seventh house is confirmed destroyed in the fire, which is now being called the "Valley View Wildfire". Approx. 200 families are staying at the Red Cross shelter at University High School.
12:40 a.m. - Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich announces the shutting down of the Joint Information Command Center due to miscommunication taking place. The sheriff said residents are not being allowed to return home and the evacuation area has not been reduced.
Thursday
11:35 p.m. - The Spokane County Emergency Operations Center says crews are making headway with the wildfire in the Dishman-Mica and Ponderosa areas.
Six homes and one outbuilding have reportedly burned. The evacuation has been reduced to an area bounded south and east of 18th and Park to 48th Avenue, and west of Dishman-Mica.
10:25 - National Guard arrives at the Emergency Operations Center.
10:00 - Stevens County Commissioners declare a state of emergency as a result of 40 fires, the largest taking place near Barstow; 30 miles north of Spokane.
9:50 - Avista states 6,000 customers without power in the Colville area due to strong winds. Roughly, 1,000 are without power in the Spokane area and another 1,000 have no electricity in the surrounding areas.
9:45 - Washington Governor Christine Gregoire declares a state of emergency. Gregoire announces air drops will be executed at daybreak Friday morning.
9:25 - More emergency shelters are set up at University and North Central high schools.
9:15 - Spokane Valley Mayor Richard Munson announced he will declare a State of Emergency.
9:00 - Evacuation area increased from Sprague to Dishman Mica to 44th.
8:40 - Evacuation area expanded from 44th and Dishman Mica to Locust and Sunderland.
8:05 - Fire estimated at 1,200 acres; at least four homes lost.
8:00 - Governor Christine Gregoire's office announces she is en route to Spokane.
7:45 - Spokane County has requested assistance from the state in its efforts to battle county-wide blazes, the largest being the Dishman Hills area fire.
6:00 - The Washington State Patrol shut down Highway 395 in both north and south directions due to fires and heavy smoke. The two largest closures were at milepost 265 where a powerline fell blocking the road. At mile post 248 there was a report of a fire near the roadway.
5:30 - Idaho State Police closed a portion of Highway 12 near Lewiston due to a fire near the Clearwater Casino.

* SCRAPS - Is sending all animals to the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center, including domestic pets and larger animals. Citizens should go to the livestock gate at the fairgrounds. Fairgrounds staff will assist residents with getting those animals into stalls. The livestock gate located off of Broadway near Aztec Electric. If residents have cages, kennels, or crates for their animals, they should bring them.
* HORSE ASSISTANCE - Horseowners can take their animals to safe keeping where space is being made available at the Spokane County Fairgrounds.
* RED CROSS - Is offering temporary shelter to residents at University High School - 12420 E. 32nd.
* EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER - Has opened an information phone bank to provide residents with current information. The phone bank number is 477-2304.
