SPOKANE -- Governor Christine Gregoire announced late Tuesday that she will submit an emergency proclamation in Spokane County due to the washout of State Route 206 near the entrance to Mount Spokane State Park.
Gregoire is expected to sign the emergency proclamation Wednesday, which will allow the Washington State Department of Transportation to seek federal emergency relief funds for the repair work.
The cost to repair the road is estimated to cost $1 million.
Construction workers are scrambling to repair a portion of Highway 206 that washed out Monday morning. Crews hope to have a temporary road in place by Friday.
Highway 206 is the only paved road to Mount Spokane State Park and at least a dozen people who live up there are stranded.

Highway 206 washed out by excess run-off water.
The first priority for construction workers is getting the running water off the roadway. The extra runoff from this weekend's warm temperatures inundated a culvert pipe.
The water undercut the asphalt causing the roadway to break apart.
Once crews install a new culvert the runoff will flow back into the creek. The plan then is to put in a temporary gravel road until engineers design a new permanent fix.
In the mean time, more than a dozen people living on the other side of this project are left stranded. The only way out is to walk.
