The elite women's start of Bloomsday 2008.
Race Director Don Kardong told KREM 2 NEWS just before the start of the race that more than 47,000 people registered but usually 2,000 to 3,000 of those people don't finish, so organizers are expecting about 45,000 to cross the finish line.
It was also easier for racers to begin their run than ever before. Today marks the third year of a staggered start system, so participants could show up just before the start of their race and have no problem starting on time.
Race organizers reported no major medical problems as of 2 p.m.. Sunday, but they have noticed more people than usual not able to complete the race because of dehydration. A small number of participants needed help on Doomsday Hill from medical crews.
Bloomsday 2008 concluded with a post-race party until 4 p.m. in Riverfront Park.
