Winter storms leave 'robust snowpack' in Idaho mountains

03:48 PM PDT on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

BOISE, ID.-- Hydrologists say the snow storms that swept across Idaho this winter have left behind robust snowpack levels in mountains stretching from Coeur d'Alene to Ketchum.

That's good news for farmers, ranchers, anglers and other water users who rely on steady water supplies and stream flows during the summer months.

The Idaho Water Supply Committee says snowpack levels in most mountain ranges across the state are at or above 30-year averages.

The highest levels are in northern Idaho, where some low-level snowpacks are close to 200 percent of average.

State and federal officials say heavy snows and spring melt will help fill reservoirs that were depleted during 2007.

Officials have also lessened the likelihood of flooding in many areas of the state.
