Prized racehorse put down after pit bull attack

SPOKANE VALLEY- Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service is investigating a pit bull attack Sunday Spokane Valley. Two pit bulls attacked a horse at 420 N. Conklin, causing severe injury.

Pitbulls attacked a racehorse in Spokane Valley, gravely injuring it. The horse was later put down.
Witnesses were alerted by barking and looked outside. The two dogs had the horse down on the ground were seen biting the horse on its face and neck.
Owners Robert and Lori Lightfoot ran outside and yelled at the dogs. Both dogs ran out of the pasture. The horse had to be later put down because of its injuries.
An off-duty animal protection officer was in the area and located the dogs. The owner of the dogs Katrina Schelin was cited for the dogs running at large and threatening an animal.

Drink the Wind was put down Sunday after being attacked by pit bulls.
Both dogs were deemed dangerous and impounded at SCRAPS animal shelter. They will be euthanized by SCRAPS on Tuesday.
The horse's name was Drink the Wind. He won 22 races during his career. He was 33 years old. Lori Lightfoot says Drink's winnings helped buy their ranch and home.
