Threat against Washington ferry unsubstantiated

BREMERTON, Wash. – Investigative sources tell KING 5 News that a terrorist threat forced a state ferry to turn around and return to Bremerton.

The Department of Homeland Security is investigating a threat made against this ferry on Tuesday.

The threat turned out to be unsubstantiated.

The anonymous threat was called in at about 12:30 p.m. from a nearby pay phone. Tuesday, about five minutes after the ferry left Bremerton. Sources say the caller basically said the next ferry to leave the Bremerton terminal would be subject to terrorism.

The Washington State Patrol immediately turned the ferry around and closed roads in the area.

The boat was cleared and a bomb squad swept the vessel, but nothing was found.

The state patrol says the case is being handled by the Department of Homeland Security.

A state ferry spokeswoman, Susan Harris, says the Bremerton terminal is closed while the ferry Hyak is there. Another ferry leaving Seattle for Bremerton has been redirected to Bainbridge Island. The 12:35 p.m. sailing from Bremerton was cancelled.

The Coast Guard has three boats responding.
