AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. -- A sports car doing practice laps at Spokane Raceway Park in Airway Heights lost control and killed a contractor working alongside the track around 1:50 p.m. Friday.

Sgt. Dave Reagan of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was 68-year-old Bob Arndt Post Falls, ID who was working as a private contractor at the race track.

He and Jay Livingston, the manager of Austin Motor Sports Management that operates the raceway, were restriping the lanes on the pavement of the track today.

At the time of the collision, Livingston, the only witness to the accident, said he and the victim were standing in a safe area off the track behind a chain-link fence near some porta-potties when the driver of a red Infiniti G30 lost control and slammed into Arndt.

Livingston said he saw the Infiniti coming at them and tried to get Arndt out of the way, but was unsuccessful.

Sgt. Reagan said Arndt was thrown 15 feet in the air and hit a tree before falling to the ground.  Reagan said the victim was described as dead on impact.

The driver of the Infiniti was a 46-year-old former military pilot who was one of about 30 drivers doing practice laps on the track at the time.  The driver was not hurt and Sgt. Reagan said he most likely will not be charged.

Officials at the track said racing will go on tonight, but it will be delayed.

Investigators expect to clear the scene around 5:30 p.m.
