As of Monday evening, Spokane Public Schools (Dist. 81) plans to open on Tuesday. Here is a statement from the school district:

Spokane Public Schools’ buildings and buses are ready, and officials plan to welcome students back to school Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Officials from Durham Transportation, which provides bus service for the district, has its fleet of buses chained up and ready to go. Because of side streets narrowed to a single lane by snow berms, however, officials predicted many delays in the coming days.

Parents concerned about students walking to school are encouraged to walk with their students, if possible. Make sure students are dressed in warm, brightly colored clothing so they can be seen more easily by motorists. Students should walk on sidewalks when possible, and not walk on snow berms.

If students have to walk in the street, remind them to walk facing traffic, and as close to the edge of the street as possible. If two or more people are walking together, they should walk in a single-file line.

Superintendent Nancy Stowell urged community members to shovel their sidewalks to ensure a safe path for students on their way to school and to bus stops.
