UPDATE 2:08pm: The Spokane Sheriff's Dept. has issued the following release on the explosive device detonation:
Sheriff’s members of the Spokane City/County Explosives Disposal Unit responded to the scene of a found improvised explosive device Wednesday morning at Trent and Idaho Road.
Highway workers discovered the device about 8:55 a.m. and notified a sheriff’s traffic corporal who was working nearby. He in turn called Deputy Brett Pierson and Sgt. Matt Lyons of EDU.
They determined that the item was likely a working device and disrupted it at the scene. Trent was closed to motor vehicle traffic for about five minutes while the operation was underway.
Pierson later said the device was about the size of a pop can and appeared to have contained smokeless black powder.
Identity of the person who constructed and left the device along the roadway is unknown, but investigation into the matter continues.
All units involved in the operation were clear of the scene by shortly after noon.
