Don't get scammed: Tips to stay safe this Cyber Monday

Avoiding scams on Cyber Monday

SPOKANE, Wash. -- It is something you have probably heard a thousand times in terms of scams: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

That still applies on Cyber Monday; but, it gets a little tougher to navigate as many retailers offer great deals online in order to entice virtual shoppers.

"We're looking for those amazing deals, so the 'too good to be true' becomes much more of a gray area than it usually is," said Kirstin Davis with the Better Business Bureau. "There's just so much volume of information and activity, especially online. Try to take a step back, take a breath, relax, and take that extra time to make sure you're dealing with a reputable site."

Davis passed along a few tips for you as you seek out Cyber Monday deals.

• When you are on a website, check the address bar. You want to see 'https' on the left-hand side (the 's' means 'secure'). Many web browsers will also show a little lock icon, too.

• If you're in an email that's offering a good deal, check where it's coming from and where it's sending you to. Then, double check. Scammers can be pretty crafty, and often create web addresses that are just a word or even a letter off from the actual retailer.  A good work around is to open a new browser and navigate to the store's website yourself rather than clicking on the link.

"Scammers know exactly what to do to make it look legitimate," Davis said. "What they're counting on this time of year is just the massive volume of activity that's happening.  There's going to be a lot of confusion in the marketplace, and a lot of communication.

"That's why you just want to slow down a little bit and really take notice."

• One last tip: If something bad does happen -- you click on a wrong link, or you think your identity and information have been compromised - -head to idtheft.gov.  There, you will be guided through a process that will help keep your identity and personal information secure.
