PULLMAN, Wash. – Yale Rosen led Washington State to a pair of victories over visiting San Jose State in nonconference baseball, Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Spartans (8-20) and Cougars (11-13) resumed a game that was suspended Friday night due to rain. San Jose State scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.

Washington State picked up a run in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Matt Mendenhall. The Cougars then rallied for seven runs in the eighth. The rally was capped by Rosen’s grand slam that broke an 8-8 tie.

Kellen Camus (3-0) gave up two runs, one earned, in four innings of relief for the victory. Ian Hamilton recorded the final two outs for his eighth save.

In Saturday’s regularly scheduled game, Rosen staked Washington State to a 1-0 lead with a homer in the first. After the Spartans scored twice in the fourth to take the lead, the Cougars tied the game 2-2 on Rosen’s RBI-triple in the sixth. Rosen finished the game 3-for-4, a double shy of the cycle, and the two RBI.

In the eighth, Nick Tanielu delivered a two-run double off Logan Handzlik (2-1) to providing the game-winning runs and make a winner out of Matt Bower (2-0), who pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Hamilton worked the ninth for his ninth save.

“Those were much-needed wins for us today,” Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. “Yale (Rosen) has been locked in for the last couple of weeks and he is a big part of our offense.”

The four-game series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
