PULLMAN -- There appear to be a number of differences between last year's Cougars and this year's team, among them is confidence. Something Mike Leach's team will carry with them this week to Southern California.

On Monday Washington State's players were not shy about their optimism heading to USC, despite having not won in Los Angeles since 2000 and having only come away with wins three times since 1941. However, that means little to this WSU team which boasts no players that have played USC in Memorial Coliseum.

Saturday marks the earliest the Cougs have opened their Pac-12 slate since 2008 when they also go going week two, in a visit from Cal. Quarterback Connor Halliday said Monday that the USC game is significant due to their overall season goals.

Leach's team did not overflow with confidence in 2012, something the coach acknowledged Wednesday. The change this year comes as a result of experience and hard work - both allow them to let it loose when the lights are on.

"We play harder and we're more committed to developing our ability," Leach said.

Washington State visits USC Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
