Position battles were a given this offseason for the Washington St. football team. The Cougars also said early on that they expected there to be some big hits. That combination can cause things to get heated.
Washington St. was back on Rogers Field Thursday afternoon, where the competition continues to crank up. Cornerback Daniel Simmons said Saturday that guys are trying to embarrass each other, and that no one is solidified at any spot.
With Mike Leach's brand new staff, players are doing their best to catch the coaches' eyes. Things got a bit chippy Thursday, but football is a physical game, and Leach isn't too concerned about it getting out of hand.
"I think they're passionate right now," Leach said. "There will be a time as you get through camp where you settle that stuff down. I can look past that since we had really good tempo today.
"Both sides I thought were real physical today."
The Cougars will hold their second scrimmage of the spring Saturday afternoon.
