Mike Zimmer, who was defensive coordinator at Washington State University under Mike Price in the early 90s, will be hired as the new head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, ESPN reported Wednesday.

Zimmer has served the past five seasons as Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator. The Bengals gave up the third-fewest yards this season and were tied for fifth in points allowed at 19.1 per game.

The Vikings were second-to-last in defensive yardage and dead last with 30 points per game allowed.

Zimmer was defensive coordinator for the Cougars from 1989-1993 before jumping to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. In his final season at WSU, Zimmer's defense was ranked 8th overall in the FBS (Division I-A) and 2nd in rushing defense.
