SPOKANE -- Calvin Jurich posted a rare triple-double to lead 19th-ranked Whitworth to a 94-60 win over visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse in the NWC opener for both teams.
Jurich scored 16 points and added career highs of 14 rebounds and 10 assists for the Pirates (9-1 overall, 1-0 NWC). He combined with Nate Montgomery to score 32 of Whitworth’s 49 first half points, including 23 in a row during a stretch in which the Pirates broke the game open in the first period.
Alex Stockner made a pair of free throws to pull the Bruins (4-6, 0-1) within 20-16 nine minutes into the first half. But then Jurich and Montgomery went to work to score 23 points in a row for the Bucs and Whitworth led 43-28 with 1:30 to play. David Riley and Clay Gebbers then hit back to back three pointers for the Pirates and Whitworth took a 49-28 lead into the locker rooms.
Bo Gregg knocked down back to back three pointers for the Pirates from assists by Jurich early in the second half to give Whitworth a 61-31 lead and the Pirates were never threatened.
Montgomery led Whitworth with 19 points, all in the first half. In addition to Jurich’s effort, Gregg made five three pointers to tally 15 points and Riley totaled 10 points. The Pirates shot 50% from the field, including 64% from three point range, making 16 of 25. Whitworth just missed tying the school record of 17 three-pointers in a game, set at the 1996 NAIA Division II national tournament against Howard Payne.
"Calvin is a very solid player and his performance tonight is a direct result of the great work ethic he brings every day," said Pirate head coach Jim Hayford.
Stockner led George Fox with 14 points and six rebounds, while Evan Atwater added 11 points. Grant Valhalla came off of the bench to score 10 points and Jack Martin led the Bruins with eight assists. George Fox made 36% of its shots and the Bruins struggled from beyond the arc, making only 4 of 22 from long range (18%).
Whitworth will host Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday night, while George Fox travels to Walla Walla to play Whitman.
