Week 2 Preview: San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks

Both the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks lost in week one. Neither scored a touchdown. The similarities, however, end there. Seattle maintains high hopes for its season after an admittedly frustrating road loss to a rival for the NFC crown, while San Francisco barely put up a fight on its home turf.

The 49ers converted just two of 11 third downs and only managed 217 yards of total offense. General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have their work cut out for them to rebuild this team to its former glory. While the first draft received solid reviews, this doesn’t look to be the year.

“I said, we are just being cautious with him,” Richard explained. “We’ll see whether or not he is going to be available. I know he is preparing as if he is and he will be available. I think it’ll be coach’s decision.”

Seattle comes home 0-1 after a disappointing loss in Green Bay. While there were many positives – Russell Wilson looks healthy again, the defense was stifling, the rookie class looks solid – many of the same questions linger. Can the offensive line perform well enough to not be a liability? Will the run game ever return to the glory of the Marshawn Lynch days? Those questions won’t be answered Sunday, but against a team with many more question marks, the Seahawks should be able to begin to right the ship.

The matchup perhaps doesn’t have the same luster of just a few years ago, when both teams were regular playoff contenders, but it’s still a vital game. The Seahawks have been nearly invincible at home, have won 13 of the last 14 home openers and have defeated San Francisco six straight times. Shanahan and company have this date circled as a test of where their team currently is and where it might be going.
