GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Urban Meyer's resignation lasted less than 24 hours.

Meyer will instead take an indefinite leave of absence as Florida's head football coach, opening the door for his return to the Gators.

A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press today that Meyer had changed his mind. Meyer is to speak at a news conference in New Orleans later today.

Meyer had cited health issues for his original decision to step down after five seasons and two national championships with the Gators.

Meyer's reversal would be good news for Louisville. Cardinals athletic director Tom Jurich said today he's optimistic new football coach Charlie Strong will remain at the school.

Jurich says he understands if the longtime Florida defensive coordinator is interested in becoming the Gators' coach following Meyer's decision. Strong will coach the Gators' defense in the Sugar Bowl and is expected to return to Louisville on Jan. 2.
