COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Matthew Richmond from Los Angeles finished his triathlon at 11:57 p.m. Sunday night, less than three minutes before the midnight cutoff.

Competitors began the 17-hour race between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. The Ironman Triathlon requires a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.

At least four athletes finished after the midnight cutoff, and therefore won’t be considered official Ironman Coeur d’Alene finishers. One person missed the title by just 45 seconds. The last person missed it by eight minutes.
