COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho -- A firefighter from Wisconsin will run the marathon portion of Sunday’s Ironman in his firefighting gear.

“Nobody knows me through the swim and the bike,” Verhelst said. “Then when I get in the gear, everyone remembers who I am.”

Robert Verhelst will wear all 50 pounds of gear from the suit, helmet, all the way to the air tank. He put a few patches on his suit that are tributes to the men and women who died on 9/11. Verhelst served at ground-zero and now runs in his gear to honor those who died.

“It’s about having someone doing something bigger than themselves,” Verhelst said. “The finish line to me is always the beginning of something new, so when I get to the finish line I know there’s another cause.”
