Indians Nearly Complete Comeback in 3-2 Loss

Spokane, WASH. - The Spokane Indians nearly pulled off another Redband Rally but fell just short in front of 5,490 fans. The Indians still take the five-game series but drop the finale 3-2 to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes on Baseball Hat Giveaway presented by Pepsi, Arby's and The Inlander.

Trailing 1-0 in the first half, Melvin Novoa drove in Spokane's first run of the game. The catcher slapped a double down the third base line to score Chad Smith. The RBI double extended Novoa's hitting streak to 11 games, which is the longest active streak in the Northwest League. He finished 2-3 with an RBI and run.

The tie score didn't last long as the Volcanoes plated two runs in the next half inning. An RBI single from Kevin Rivera and a sacrifice fly from Malique Ziegler gave Salem-Keizer a 3-1 lead.

The score stayed 3-1 until the ninth inning. With one down, Novoa reached base on a walk. Three wild pitches later, he scored to make it a 3-2 game. Kole Enright reached base on a walk, giving Curtis Terry a chance to tie the game, and potentially win it with a home run. A hard-fought at-bat for the first basemen ended with a strikeout and a Spokane loss.

On the mound, Alex Speas had another short outing for the Indians but the bullpen had his back. Ismel Lopez pitched 4.1 shutout innings, while striking out six batters. Argenis Rodriguez finished the game with three no-hit innings to go along with five strikeouts.

With the loss, the Indians are now four games back of North Division leading Vancouver with four games left in the first half of the season. Spokane's elimination number is one. All team records will reset at 0-0 when the second half of the season starts on July 24th.

Next up, the Spokane Indians head to Hillsboro to open up a five-game series with the Hops. The next Indians home game is Tuesday, July 25th for Christmas in July brought to you by Dutch Bros. Coffee, 93.7 The Mountain, and 1510 KGA NW Sports Talk. It's game one of a three-game series with the Everett AquaSox. Game one starts at 6:30 PM with gates opening at 5:30 PM.
