SPOKANE -- A busy day for the 300 volunteers trying to get Hoopfest teams ready for play. The challenge for the check-in staff is to run a smooth weekend with 7,100 teams consisting of 29,000 players.
They were supposed to be halfway through on Friday afternoon, but not enough teams showed up on Thursday.
"Things are very steady; we've got quite a bit of people checking in today. We're hoping to check in the rest of the teams that we haven't caught up with yet," said Hoopfest Check-In Volunteer Kathleen Sullivan.
Preparations for Hoopfest weekend start at the beginning of June. Plenty of planning and volunteers are making it short and sweet for players.
"It's a lot easier now because it's digital, it's pretty efficient. It's the most organized tournament I've ever played in," said one excited Hoopfest player.
A month of hard work is coming to an end and the reward for the volunteers is just around the corner.
"One of the benefits of being in team check-in is that we are all packed up by midday Saturday and we can relax and enjoy the games," said Sullivan.
Check-in is open until 7 p.m. Friday. On Saturday they have limited check-in for out of town teams. Volunteers are expecting the last few hundred to show up in the morning.
