The Spokane Chiefs were 5:22 away from extending their impressive postseason run into the WHL Western Conference Finals. But two Tri-City goals in 64 seconds turned the tide in Game 7 in Kennewick.
Don Nachbaur's team held a 2-1 third period lead after Mike Aviani found Mitch Holmberg in front of the net to give the Chiefs their second one-goal advantage of the game.
The Americans came alive in the late stages of regulation. Tri-City peppered Spokane goalie Eric Williams with shots, but had little to show for it before Malte Stromwall found a loose puck to the right of the crease and fired on net to even the score at 2-2. Just 1:04 later Brendan Shinnimin launched a wrist shot past Williams for the game winner.
Williams finished the night with 45 saves on 48 shots.
Dominik Uher scored Spokane's first goal of the contest. With Brian Williams answering for Tri-City to establish a 1-1 tie after the 2nd period.
While the win ends Spokane's season, it punches Tri-City's ticket to the conference finals, where they will face Portland.
