Hawks score five straight to take Game 1

PORTLAND - The Chiefs went blow for blow with the top team in the Western Hockey League. And then the Winterhawks came alive.

Portland scored five unanswered to take a 7-2 win in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series.

Mike Aviani kept the game close in the first period with Spokane's first goal of the game. After falling back 2-1 in the second period Todd Fiddler scored a shorthanded goal to even the tally again.

Portland went ahead for good 14:44 into the second stanza with Oliver Bjorkstrand's second goal of the game. Derrick Pouliot made it 4-2 going into the third, before Ty Rattie found the net three consecutive times to push the lead out to five goals.

Spokane will try and even the series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
