A three goal third period, two from Mitch Holmberg, lifted the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants in game 5 of their first round playoff series. With the win, Spokane took a 3-2 series lead and will have a chance to clinch the series at the Spokane Arena on Sunday night.
Spokane's Liam Stewart scored a goal in his second straight game as he scored unassisted at 7:20 of the first period to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead after one. Captain Darren Kramer would tally in his second straight game at 1:09 of the second period to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Mike Aviani and Holmberg had the assists. Vancouver got on the board with a power play goal from Brendan Gallagher at 15:06 to cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1 after two periods.
Holmberg would score just 4:47 into the third period with his 4th goal of the playoffs from Aviani to give Spokane a 3-1 lead. Holmberg then notched his second of the period on the power play from Dominick Uher and Dylan Walchuk at 9:14 to give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead. Just 23 seconds later, Blake Gal tipped a Tanner Mort shot to cap the scoring and give Spokane a 5-1 victory. Holmberg finished with the two goals and an assist. Mike Aviani had two assists in the victory as well. Eric Williams turned aside 23 shots to pick up his 3rd straight win.
The Chiefs will take on the Giants in game 6 of the series Sunday night at 6:05pm at the Spokane Arena.
