Tyler King's goal 2:46 into overtime lifted the Spokane Chiefs to a 6-5 win over the Regina Pats Saturday in Regina, Saskatchewan. Spokane overcame deficits of 4-2 and 5-3 in the game to pick up their first win of the season after trailing after 2 periods.
The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 4:23 into the game on Dylan Walchuk's power play goal. Walchuk's 7th goal of the season was assisted by Brenden Kichton and Mitch Holmberg. Holmberg then scored his 15th of the season at 7:41 to put Spokane up 2-0. Regina would rally on a power play goal by Colten Mayor and a tally from Morgan Klimchuk with just 45 seconds left in the first to tie the game at two after one period.
Regina kept the momentum going with two Lane Scheidl power play goals in the first 3:49 of the second period to take a 4-2 lead. The Chiefs Todd Fiddler scored his team leading 21st at 8:53 to draw Spokane back within 4-3, but Klimchuk put home his second goal of the night just 30 seconds later to give the Pats a 5-3 advantage. Spokane's Reid Gow's 5th goal of the year from Tyson Predinchuk and Riley Whittingham would bring the Chiefs within 5-4 at 14:36 of the period as the Chiefs trailed by one after 40 minutes.
Carter Proft's third goal of the year would bring the Chiefs even at 5 at 6:59 of the third period, as Predinchuk and Whittingham picked up their second assists of the night. It marked the first multi point games in both Predinchuk's and Whittingham's Chiefs careers. King, like Predinchuk, a Regina native, would then seal the win with his 5th of the season on a shot from the point, on assists by Blake Gal and Kichton.
Spokane put up a season high 60 shots in the game. outshooting Regina 60-26, including a 32-6 margin from the midway point of the second period. Eric Williams, who came on in relief of Garret Hughson in the second period, picked up his 15th win of the year. The Chiefs have gone 2-0 on their Eastern Division trip and will head to Prince Albert to play the division leading Raiders Tuesday night at 5pm Pacific.
