CALGARY -- The Spokane Chiefs selected defenseman Evan Fiala with their first round pick (14th overall) in Thursday's WHL Bantam Draft. It's the third time in the last four years that Spokane has picked a defenseman in the first round.
A 14-year-old from Clavet, Saskatchewan, Fiala already has plenty of size. He's listed as 6'2" and 171 pounds. He's not afraid to use that size either, leading his bantam team in penalty minutes this season.
"Evan is a big body and a good skater that plays with skill," Chiefs Director of Player Personnel Chris Moulton said. "He makes plays, is a heady guy and a well rounded kid."
Fiala currently plays for the Saskatchewan Valley Vipers AA. He registered five goals and 27 assists for 32 points in 27 games this season, and he also added two goals and two assists in six playoff games.
