SPOKANE -- It's going to be 80-plus degrees on Saturday, but that's not going to stop the start of the Western Hockey League season.

The Spokane Chiefs open the year on the road against the rival Tri-City Americans this weekend. The puck drops at 7pm at the Toyota Center on Saturday.

It's the first of 12 regular season games between the Chiefs and Ams this season. Spokane took the season series 7-5 last year against Tri-City and they also beat the Americans 4-2 in the Western Conference semifinals.

It's a new look Spokane team after they lost 20-year-old forwards Tyler Johnson and Levko Koper, defenseman Jared Cowen, and goaltender James Reid. The team also traded away Kenton Miller, Tyler Vanscourt, and Brady Brassart.

We'll have full coverage of Saturday night's showdown on KREM 2 News and KREM.com.
