SPOKANE -- Tyler Johnson and Blake Gal each scored a pair of goals as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Tri-City Americans for the fifth straight time with a 5-1 win on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Arena.
Johnson's goal was his 50th of the season while Gal and Anthony Bardaro both scored their 20th giving the Chiefs seven different players to get to that mark this season.
The win was Spokane's sixth in a row and 10th in their last 11 games as they remain a point behind the Portland Winterhawks for first place in the Western Conference. Spokane pulled 10 points in front of the Americans with just five games remaining for both clubs.
Tri-City scored first on a Tyler Schmidt goal 14:04 into the first period. The Chiefs would score the next five, the first coming at 16:19 when Bardaro backhanded in a rebound of a Tanner Mort shot.
Gal scored his first at 5:03 of the second with a power play goal from Johnson and Brenden Kichton. Johnson then made it 3-1 at 17:44. His second was scored on the power play at 2:50 of the third. Kichton and Corbin Baldwin both assisted.
Gal tallied his second of the night at 9:01 giving the 9,156 fans in attendance a coupon for a Chalupa from participating Taco Bells.
Spokane's franchise record for most players with 20 or more goals in a single season is eight, set in 1995-96. The Chiefs have three more players within two of the mark; Dominik Uher (19), Jared Cowen and Matt Marantz (18).
