Travis Brown's goal 8:10 into overtime lifted the Victoria Royals to a 2-1 OT win over the Spokane Chiefs in game one of their Western Conference playoff series Saturday night in Victoria, B.C. Victoria now has a 1-0 lead in the best of seven opening round set.
Victoria jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Ben Walker's rebound goal at 15:26 of the first period. Chiefs goalie Eric Williams kept Spokane in the game, turning aside 13 of 14 Royals shots in the stanza. Spokane failed to capitalize on 3 power play chances in the second period as the game remained a 1-0 Victoria lead after two. The Chiefs outshot Victoria 11-7 in the second. Spokane's Riley Whittingham would tie the game at one 2:22 into the third period from Cole Wedman and Jacob Cardiff as the Chiefs would send the game to overtime.
Brown would win it on a backdoor feed from Stephen Hodges to give the Royals their first win over the Chiefs on Victoria's home ice in 7 games since the franchise re-located from Chilliwack in the 2011-12 season. Victoria outshot the Chiefs 33-27, as Spokane went 0-5 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. Spokane will look to even the series at one in game two set for Sunday at 5:05pm.
