PORTLAND, OR. -- The Spokane Chiefs opened the 2010 playoffs with a dramatic come from behind 5-4 win over the Portland Winter Hawks in game one of their opening round playoff series.
]Spokane overcame a 4-2 Portland lead after two periods with a three goal third to take a 1-0 series lead in the best of seven series.
Portland took a 2-0 lead after one as Stephan Schneider scored 2:47 into the game and Taylor Aronson followed with a power play goal at 9:31. Portland outshot Spokane 14-8 in the period.
Spokane’s Kyle Beach would score a power play goal just 4 minutes into the second period to bring Spokane within 2-1. Jared Spurgeon and Tyler Johnson got the assists. The Chiefs Steve Kuhn would even the game at 2 at 6:03 of the second on a Matt Marantz pass into the left circle. Portland would retake the lead on a Brad Ross breakaway at 15:37 and then Luca Sbisa would score with just 36 seconds left on an odd man rush to make it 4-2 Portland after two. Portland outshot Spokane 12-5 in the second.
The Chiefs Stephan Ulmer would score on the power play 4:37 into the third period to bring Spokane within 4-3. Tyler Johnson would then bring the Chiefs even at 4-4 with a rebound of his own shot at 6:25. Levko Koper got the assist. Spokane would get the game winner from Beach at 18:42 of the third on a feed from Mitch Wahl.
The Chiefs will face Portland in game 2 of their series Sunday night at 5pm in Portland.
