Poll:
Which area football team has the best chance of winning a state championship?
The number of area high school football teams alive in state tournaments has dwindled to a handful. The big question now is, which team has the best chance to bring home the state's top trophy?
Ferris is the only team left in the 4A tournament. The Saxons face Eisenhower on Saturday in the quarterfinals in Yakima at 1pm. If Ferris wins, they would play either Auburn (11-0) or Skyview (9-3). They wouldn't have to face Skyline or Bothell (the state's top teams) until the championship.
Mt. Spokane is alive and well in the 3A tournament. They have a tough test against undefeated Lakes on Saturday in the quarterfinals at Joe Albi Stadium (1pm start time). If the Wildcats win, they would have a "home game" in the semifinals as well (against either Lindbergh or Liberty).
West Valley is the only team remaining in the 2A tournament as well. They face Othello in the quarterfinals at Gonzaga Prep High School on Saturday (4pm). If the Eagles win, it would be a battle of undefeated teams in the semifinals. West Valley would host Ellensburg with a trip to the title game on the line.
Two of our area teams are still playing in the 1A tournament, but they face each other in the quarterfinals. Chelan (5-5) hosts Omak (7-3) at 1pm on Saturday in the Wenatchee Apple Bowl. The winner of that game would face either undefeated Connell or River View in the semifinals. Undefeated Cascade Christian and undefeated Montesano are on the other side of the bracket.
Colfax is the one area team remaining in the 2B tournament. The Bulldogs, the No. 1 team in the state, play South Bend in the quarterfinals at Gonzaga Prep High School (1pm) on Saturday. A tough test would come in the semifinals. Colfax will face either undefeated LaSalle or DeSales for a trip to Tacoma.
Three area teams are fighting their way to the state championship in the 1B tournament. Colton (9-1) and Cusick (10-0) go head-to-head on Saturday in what should be one of the best games in the 1B ranks all year. The winner of that showdown faces either Almira/Coulee-Hartline or Tri-Cities Prep in the semifinals.
Now that you know how things sit...which team do you think has the best chance of winning a state championship?
We'll announce the winner of the vote on KREM 2 News on Thursday night at 6pm.
Don't forget that high schools in Idaho are playing for state championships this weekend. As far as our area teams go, Sandpoint plays Blackfoot at the Kibbie Dome on Friday night at 7pm in the 4A championship, while Prairie faces Oakley at Holt Arena on Saturday (1pm) in the 1AD1 title tilt.
