SPOKANE VALLEY -- Valley Christian lost its first game since the death of player Drew Swank.
Valley Christian lost 56-12 to Selkirk. The team cancelled last week’s game in memory of Drew Swank. The 17-year-old took a hit in a game two weeks ago and later died from severe brain swelling. Now, his teammates are trying to move ahead and honor Swank at the same time. Friday, Valley Christian looked like any school gearing up for a Friday night football game, which is what parents and players were hoping for. R.V.’s were lined up just before 3 p.m. for the long drive to Selkirk for the big game. Players packed up, many people wearing Drew Swank’s number, 15. Coaches met with players last week, they say most wanted to continue the season. Some of the players were a little unsure, but eventually they came around. The coaches also said they talked to parents who decided that they too want the season to go on. In Drew’s memory, every jersey had a patch with number 15 sewn on. His number was also added to the back of the helmets, which, Coach Heden says were top of the line when the school bought them last year.
