SPOKANE -- Only three 4A Greater Spokane League football teams get a chance at a state play-in game this season. Mead clinched the No. 1 seed, while Central Valley is the No. 2 seed. The third seed was much more difficult to figure out.
Gonzaga Prep, Ferris, and University all met in a three way tiebreaker at Joe Albi Stadium on Tuesday night. The winner earns the No. 3 seed and a match-up with Wenatchee for a trip to the state tournament.
The Saxons and Bullpups faced off in the first game (University was granted a bye thanks a drawing at the start of the season). Ferris beat Gonzaga Prep 14-7 thanks to the efforts of Connor Halliday. The Saxons quarterback threw for a touchdown and added a 54-yard touchdown run as well.
Ferris and University then met in the second game. The Saxons defense came to play holding the Titans scoreless for all 16 minutes. Halliday connected with Jason Bates for the game's only touchdown, while Alex Belling nailed a 29-yard field goal. The Saxons ousted University, 10-0.
Ferris now plays Wenatchee in the Apple Bowl at 7pm on Friday night (winner goes to state). University will host Moses Lake at 7pm on Friday, and Gonzaga Prep plays at Eastmont on Friday at 6pm.
In the other state play-in games, Mead hosts Southridge at Joe Albi Stadium on Friday at 8pm, while Central Valley faces Kamiakin (also at Joe Albi Stadium) at 3pm on Saturday.
