COLVILLE, Wash.--A Colville High School senior football player is fighting for his life tonight at Spokane’s Sacred Heart Medical Center.
Austin Pete suffered a concussion during Colville’s game against West Valley Friday night.
School administrators told KREM 2 News coaches are reviewing game tape to see what happened because right now it isn't clear when or how Pete was hurt.
In the second quarter, Pete caught a 44-yard touchdown pass.
Late in the fourth quarter, the team huddled on the field before a play. That's when a teammate noticed
Pete acting strange and told him to run off the field.
Coaches and trainers immediately started checking him out on the sidelines. His only complaint at the time was leg trouble.
An ambulance took him to Mount Carmel Hospital where the decision was made to fly him by helicopter to Sacred Heart for surgery. Sacred Heart officials did not say what kind of surgery he had.
Late Monday afternoon, Sacred Heart officials said Pete was in serious condition in the intensive care unit, but is recovering from an apparent concussion.
Colville Superintendent Ken Emmil told KREM 2 News Pete is talking and that his first questions were “How are my teammates and did we win the game?” Colville lost 38-22.
Emmil said coaches talked to the players about Pete’s injury today, but there are no plans to cancel this Friday's game when the team travels to Clarkston.
