Gonzaga begins its pursuit of a second conference title in four years Friday, with an improved Pepperdine club coming to town.
The Bulldogs and Waves open up West Coast Conference play with a weekend series at Patterson Baseball Complex, starting Friday at 6:00 p.m.Mark Machtolf's team is 16-and-6 after last weekend's sweep of Hawaii.
The coach expects the conference to be the best it's been in his nine years. The Zags were picked to finish second, behind San Diego, after taking second in 2011. With no conference tournament in the end, it all depends on what goes down each Friday through Sunday.
"I think it's important only for the fact that there's 24 games," Machtolf said. "We tell our guys, you got eight weekends and you've gotta bust your rear end for all eight and not get caught up in just one game or one series."
