SPOKANE – The Gonzaga men's basketball team will take on Arizona on December 17th in the annual Battle in Seattle at KeyArena.
It's going to be a showdown between two of the best teams in the west. Gonzaga has won or shared the last 11 West Coast Conference title, while Arizona is coming off a trip to the Elite 8 last season.
The Seattle event will be the fourth all-time meeting between the teams, with Arizona winning all three of the previous contests. The two teams last faced each other December 14, 2008, in Phoenix with the Wildcats beating the Zags, 69-64.
The most memorable contest between the two teams happened during the NCAA Tournament in 2003. Gonzaga, a nine-seed, took Arizona, a one-seed, into double overtime, eventually losing 96-95. The game is still remembered as one of the greatest in Bulldogs history despite the loss.
2011 marks the ninth contest in the history of the event. The Bulldogs have a 4-4 record in Battle in Seattle games. Gonzaga has scored victories over Missouri (2003), UMass (2004), Oklahoma State (2005), and Davidson (2009).
