SPOKANE, Wash. - In the last 14 years the Gonzaga men's basketball team has gone from the Cinderella of the NCAA Tournament to consideration as the potential overall number one seed.
Gonzaga's players and coaches will gather around a TV to watch KREM 2 at 3 p.m. Sunday to find out if they earned the overall number one seed or at least a top seed in one of the four regions during the CBS Sports Selection Show.
By most expert accounts they will be the number one seed in the West Region, but what's unknown is if Gonzaga can overcome its perceived weak strength of schedule to get the number one overall seed over schools from traditional power conferences. The competition for number one overall will come primarily from Louisville, Kansas, Duke and and Indiana according to most basketball analysts.
ESPN's Joe Lunardi has Gonzaga as the number one seed in the West Region playing in Salt Lake City. Lunardi on Saturday wrote on ESPN.com that if Louisville had lost the Big East Conference Tournament then Gonzaga would have been the number one overall seed. However, Louisville thumped Syracuse Saturday night to win the Big East Tournament so Lunardi picked Louisville as his overall top seed.
CBSsports.com and Sportsillustrated have the Zags as the number seed in the West in Salt Lake City against 16-seed Western Kentucky.
Foxsports.com also has the Zags in Salt Lake City as the top seed against 16-seed James Madison.
After learning their seed, game site and opponent Sunday the team will go to the McCarthey Athletic Center and meet with the media to answer questions about their first tournament game. You can watch this news conference streamed live at 4:30 p.m. on KREM.com.
