SPOKANE – Gonzaga University’s Drew Heid and Cody Martin were selected on the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.
Heid was picked by the Los Angeles Angels in the ninth round. He is the highest draft pick for the Zags since Clayton Mortensen went in the supplemental first round in 2007.
Heid, a left-handed hitting center fielder, posted team highs in batting average (.390), hits (92), doubles (18), triples (4), stolen bases (8), slugging (.602), on-base percentage (.467), runs scored (54) and a .376 batting average in WCC play this season.
Martin was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 20th round. The right-handed pitcher just wrapped up his junior season at Gonzaga. That means he can sign a professional contract or return for his senior year next season.
Martin finished with a 6.55 ERA and 5-7 record this season. He struck out 89 batters in 88 innings of work.
The draft wraps up with rounds 31-50 on Wednesday.
