Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team has been selected by the West Coast Conference coaches to claim the regular-season title and two Bulldogs have also been voted to the All-WCC preseason team.
The Bulldogs, who posted a 16-0 record last season to win the regular-season crown, received eight first-place votes and 80 points in the first season of the 10-team conference as the University of the Pacific joined the league July 1.
BYU and Saint Mary’s College each received one first-place vote with BYU edging the Gaels for second place 72 points to 66 points. Coaches could not vote for their team.
The University of San Francisco received 51 points for fifth place to edge the University of San Diego by one point. Loyola Marymount University is sixth with 44 points, Pacific is seventh with 28 points with Santa Clara University (25), University of Portland (24) and Pepperdine University (10) claiming the last three spots.
The Bulldogs junior backcourt of Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. was named to the All-WCC preseason squad.
Pangos, named to the Bob Cousy Award watch list earlier this week which goes to the nation’s top collegiate point guard, was the only Zag to start all 35 games a year ago and is the team’s top returning scorer from at 11.9 ppg. He went 78-187 for 41.7 percent from 3-point range and was second on the team in assists with 3.3/game last year. He earned All-WCC first-team honors last season after being named the WCC Newcomer of the Year, All-WCC first team, WCC All-Freshman team and to the WCC All-Tournament team his rookie season of 2012.
Bell averaged 9.0 ppg while going 56-143 for 39.2 percent from long range last season. A member of the WCC All-Freshman team in 2012, Bell was an honorable mention selection last season.
Joining Bell and Pangos on the All-WCC preseason team are forward Stacy Davis, Pepperdine; guard Johnny Dee, San Diego, forward Cole Dickerson and guard Cody Doolin, San Francisco; Tyler Haws, BYU; Stephen Holt, Saint Mary’s; Anthony Ireland, Loyola Marymount, and Brad Waldow, Saint Mary’s.
Gonzaga will play its lone exhibition game of the season Friday when Simon Fraser University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center at 6 p.m.
