MALIBU, Calif. – Behind a complete game shut out from pitcher Tyler Olson, No. 24 Gonzaga University baseball won its 11th consecutive game with a 2-0 series clincher over Pepperdine University Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Olson, who escaped a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning, allowed just four hits en route to his seventh win of the season.

Gonzaga bolsters its record to 26-10-1 overall and continues to hold the top West Coast Conference record of 13-4. Pepperdine who entered the week second in WCC standings, drops to 20-17 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

The Bulldogs, who are 10-0 in the month of April, got Olson (7-2) all he would need by scoring in the fourth and fifth inning.

In the fourth, Cory LeBrun scored on a wild pitch from Waves starter Corey Miller. LeBrun reached earlier in the inning with a leadoff walk. It was LeBrun who struck again in the fifth. Travis Forbes started the fifth off with a single through the right side and Cabe Reiten laid a sacrifice bunt advancing Forbes to second base.

Mitchell Gunsolus then walked putting two runners on with one out. A fielder’s choice allowed Pepperdine to get the out at third, bringing LeBrun to the plate with Zags on first and second. On the second pitch, LeBrun singled to the right side bringing home the second run of the game.

From there it was all Olson taking care of business. Pepperdine loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the eighth but Olson was able to get Austin Davidson to lineout to left ending Pepperdine’s   best threat.

The performance was the fourth complete game of the season for Olson and his first shutout. He lowered his ERA to 2.41.

Gonzaga will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. The Zags have won nine consecutive WCC games.
