30 second game guide
Bring’em Out: Southern University (0-0) at No. 12 Gonzaga (0-0) at the McCarthey Athletic Center at 6 p.m. on FSN.
Watch for: Is this year's Gonzaga team going to play to its potential? Or is it going to play to its competition? Yes, it is the season opener, but first impressions count for a lot. In no way, shape or form should this be a close game...after the first half. Will predictions become reality? Your guess is as good as mine not having seen this squad play together in a meaningful game. Stay tuned.
Fear: The Bulldogs' point guard position will make or break this year's success. This 30 second game guide has more questions than answers, as season-opening previews tend to have. The biggest hole the Zags have to fill is at the point (so long Matt Bouldin). The good news is, that's the only major gap this group has to hurdle (hence the #12 preseason rank). If junior Demetri Goodson can become the player he was recruited to be, this could be a seriously special season. If not, Gonzaga may have to revert to leaning heavily on the perimeter game (which is scary when you look at the pre-conference slate).
Respect: Gonzaga's ability to garner respect, year-after-year is truly something to be proud of if you root for this program. More often than not, the Zags appear in the nation's top-25 preseason poll, no matter how much talent departs from the previous season. It has become the privilege of other schools to play the Bulldogs, instead of the other way around 15 years ago.
Random Stuff: Southern University is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Hailing from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Southern's mascot is the Jaguars. The Athletic Director, Greg LaFleur is Gonzaga senior center Robert Sacre's father. The last time the Jags made the NCAA Tournament was in the 2005-2006 season as a 16-seed. Southern lost to top-seeded Duke, 70-54. Gonzaga will face at least five preseason top-25 teams in its non-conference schedule (#25 San Diego St., #3 Kansas St., #13 Illinois, #16 Baylor and #19 Memphis) with the possibility of playing #1 Duke in the CBE Classic Nov. 23rd.
